UKRAINE ON THE GUARD OF THE BLACK SEA ECOLOGICAL HEALTH

The State Institute of Marine Biology of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine has been studying the biology and ecological state of the Black and Azov Seas for the past 65 years. The key scientific discoveries concerning the life of the sea were made by its scientists. Among them: the discovery of marine neuston, the phenomenon of anthropogenic eutrophication, life in the depths of coastal sand deposits, as well as at the deepest depths in the hydrogen sulfide zone, and others. The description of the large-scale project of Turkey on creation of the new Istanbul navigable canal between the Black Sea and the Sea of Marmara is described. The possible ecological consequences from its realization are shown.
Keywords: Black Sea, Bosporus, Istanbul canal, ecosystem.
