HOW TO RESTORE THE ECOSYSTEM OF KUYALNYTSKYI ESTUARY?

The current state of the Kuyalnitskyi estuary (Odessa region) is one of the acutest environmental problems of the Northern Black Sea Region at the end of the 20th and beginning of the 21st centuries. In the scientific literature, the mass media, numerous public forums, and adopted state and regional documents, a number of different in time, duration, and scope of work measures to restore this mega-ecosystem are proposed. Unfortunately, only partial implementation, which was often carried out in haste, did not solve the problem as a whole, and in some cases even led to dangerous local consequences. It is impossible not to mention that one of the main reasons of an ecological catastrophe that has already taken place, besides many others, was also a socio-political one, based on the desire of the people to receive free material assets at the expense of exhausting exploitation of natural resources. In this publication, the authors did not set the goal of conducting an analysis or continuation of the discussion of the proposed approaches and measures and their effectiveness in eliminating the negative effects, but based on more than 30 years of study of the estuarine ecosystems of the Northern Black Sea Region, propose their own vision of the restoration of the ecosystem of Kuyalnitskyi estuary and the non-exhausting and diversified use of its resources, in particular plants.
Keywords: Kuyalnitskyi estuary, ecosystem, phytodiversity, conservation problems, natural resources, diversified use, national natural park.
