CHERNOBYL DISASTER: THIRTY YEARS LATER
To the 30th anniversary of the Chernobyl disaster

Abstract:
The article presents a retrospective view of the events related to the accident at the Chernobyl NPP, the situation immediately after the disaster is assessed by the scientific community and the public, and the results of the first phase of work (1986–1989) on the accident recovery are given, including those performed at the Institute of Engineering Thermophysics of NAS of Ukraine. The main problems actualized by the Chernobyl accident are reviewed, as well as research and development aimed at improving the safety of nuclear power. It is emphasized that the optimal choice of energy resources in the fuel balance of the country lies not in opposition to some types of energy, but in their intelligent, technical, economica and environmentally sound combination.
